All school supplies selling for $20 or less per item, and articles of clothing, including footwear, selling for $100 or less per item, will be exempt from sales tax. To view a full list of the items that are included in the sales tax holiday

Check out our Auction Activities!

Dear Angelus Academy Parents,

Summer 2009 is here!!! Are you enjoying your vacation? The long, hot days of summer invite relaxation, beaches, and contemplating the sprinkler. Put your time and recreation into the wonder and beauty that is the education of our children. The unconstrained time of summer need not be trivial or purposeless. Think about what you and your children can contribute during these lazy, hazy days.

Start by doing what is necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the
impossible. --St. Francis of Assisi

No time or effort on behalf of your child’s school is too small or unimportant.

The 2009 Auction Committee is working to create a festive and lucrative auction for Angelus Academy in November. There are a few jobs that we will need to complete over the summer. Please consider donating your time to these important efforts.

***************
We need space to house, sort, package, and catalog all of the wonderful donations to the Angelus Academy Auction. Do you have space that you can donate to our cause?
***************
We would like to get a page devoted to the Auction on the Angelus Academy website. Are you talented in the area of website design? Can you help us?
***************
We will need help with some behind-the-scenes solicitation for items in the silent and live auctions. To that end we will attempt to contact corporations, resorts, and out-of-area businesses donations to our worthwhile cause. Rather than knocking door-to-door in the local area, we will contact some potential donors remotely. Would you be willing to write letters, fax letters, make follow-up phone calls, or address and stuff envelopes?
***************
Budgeting and accounting are important tasks that must be completed to ensure a successful Auction. Are you talented in these areas? Can you devote some time to organizing our receipts and planning our expenses?
***************
Can you devote some time to individual and class art projects? Unique
items created by our own students are always highly desired in the Auction.
Put your heart and soul into beautiful homemade art (with the help of Mrs. Colandene, of course) this summer.
***************
Some of the best charity fundraisers are blessed with a matching donor -- a
benefactor who provides incentive for individual donations by complementing any and all receipts with his or her own identical contribution. Do you know anyone who can play financial angel to our Auction this November?
***************
Do you like to think outside-the-box? Do you like to see original, creative items in the Auction? Are you inspired to work for the future of Angelus Academy and the education of our children in virtue as well as academics? Let’s put our heads together to brainstorm about the best practices of the most successful school auctions.

Pray as though everything depended on God. Work as though everything depended on you. --
Saint Augustine

Finally, and most importantly, no effort this large will be possible without prayer. Please pray for the intercession of St. Raphael for a successful (and fun) annual auction this fall!!!

Vouchsafe, O Lord God, to send holy Raphael the Archangel to aid us: and may he whom we believe ever to stand before Thy Majesty, present our poor prayers to be blessed by Thee.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with The in the unity of the Holy Ghost, One God, world without end. Amen. --St. Raphael

THANK YOU!!!

Please Contact Helen Donovan at john.k.donovan@verizon.net or 703-941-3034 if you can help with any of these summer jobs.

Fall Auction for our Children!

Dear Angelus Academy Parents,

As you probably know, planning for the 2009 Angelus Academy Dinner
Auction is well underway. This summer, we will all be soliciting items for
the silent and live auctions. There are many ways to fulfill this need for the
development of the auction. You can help!!

Your Contacts

What contacts will you renew or make over the summer who might be
willing to help out? Will you visit your favorite restaurant? Will you
vacation in your favorite spot? Will you make improvements to your home
using contractors and handymen? Will you have your regular coffee at the
same place everyday?
Would you be willing to make an introduction to any of these businesses? If
so, mention Angelus Academy and contact the Auction Committee (details
below) for letters, forms, and follow-up phone calls.

Your Talents

Do you have a talent or vocation that you can share with the Angelus
community? Do you like to garden? Are you handy with a paintbrush or
refinishing furniture? Do you like to provide handyman servies? Do you
sew, quilt, crochet, or knit? Can you babysit or pet sit?
Is your job such that you might be able to offer an item for auction?
Can you craft an item for the auction? Can you offer your services and
talents as a silent auction item? If so, contact us to discuss details of auction
donations.

Your Friends and Family Members

Do you have friends or family members who would like to help our lovely
school? Do you know someone in the hotel or entertainment industries? Do
you know someone with whom people would like to have lunch, sign an
autograph, shadow around on the job, or offer a book, CD, DVD, or tickets
to a show?
Would you be willing to make an introduction on behalf of Angelus
Academy? If so, contact us for letters, forms, and follow-up phone calls.

Your Precious Time

Would you be willing to write letters to local and national corporations,
firms, and businesses? Or could you make follow-up phone calls? Do you
enjoy talking to people in person? Would you be willing to go “door-todoor”
in our local neighborhoods to ask for donations from past and future
benefactors and donors to Angelus Academy?
Can you devote some time to soliciting for the auction? If so, please contact
us for letters, forms, and advice. We need to coordinate our solicitation
efforts to ensure that we do not duplicate our efforts.
Your Volunteer Hours
Do you prefer to stay behind-the-scenes? Would you be willing to craft
baskets from the items donated for the auction? Do you feel comfortable
writing entries for the program and other necessary forms for the silent and
live auctions?

If you are willing and able to perform any of the necessary duties, please
contact Cindy Nolan at 703-644-2964 or cindynolan@verizon.net. We are
looking forward to hearing from you. You will continue to hear from us at
the Auction Committee about jobs we can do over the summer and the
updating of our guest list. Remember, donations are tax deductible, and no
donation is too big or too small!!!

Finally, and most importantly, no effort this large will be possible without
prayer. Please pray for the intercession of St. Raphael for a successful (and
fun) annual auction this fall!!!

THANK YOU!!!
In Christ,
Helen M. Donovan

Angelus: Wow...Great Scores on Terra Nova Tests!

Angelus Academy is known for loving teachers and for instilling the love of God in young minds.

But, with a Core Knowledge Program and Saxon Math, the students at Angelus are performing at a level many years beyond their grade. From 1st Grade through 8th Grade, the Angelus student's Terra Nova test scores are off the charts!!!

Below is the Grade Mean Equivalent scores for each grade. This means that the Angelus student scored as that grade level student would if he/she took the same examination.

For example in 2009, the Angelus 8th grade students scored at what a 12th grader in the ninth month of school would have scored on that exam.

See all the outstanding scores below:

Angelus Grade 1 performs at the 3.1 grade level

Angelus Grade 2 performs at the 4.6 grade level

Angelus Grade 3 performs at the 7.5 grade level

Angelus Grade 4 performs at the 7.8 grade level

Angelus Grade 5 performs at the 10.8 grade level

Angelus Grade 6 performs at the 12.9 grade level

Angelus Grade 7 performs at the 12.9 grade level

Angelus Grade 8 performs at the 12.9 grade level

Congratulations to the dedicated teachers, administration, parents, and especially the hard working students!!!!!!

GREAT JOB!!!!

Angelus: Teachers Returning for 2009-2010

One of the great suggestions coming from our families has been that the Administration focus on retaining our current crop of wonderful teachers and that the list of returning teachers be announced early.

Angelus Academy is pleased to announce that almost all of the grade teachers are returning for next year.

Thank you to all of these outstanding and dedicated teachers who are coming back to help educate your children and teach them about our wonderful God!

Returning is Mrs. TOVEY (Little Messengers);

Returning is MRS. GRIPPO (Kindergarten);

Returning is MRS. MCCRUMB (1st grade);

Returning is MRS. MULLEN (2nd grade);

Returning is MRS. FANTZ (3rd grade);

Returning is MRS. TRONO (4th grade);

Returning is MRS. COLANDENE (5th grade);

Returning is MR. HOENSCHEID (6th ,7th, and 8th grade);

Returning is MRS. HUNT (6th ,7th, and 8th grade);

Returning is MRS. MAIMONE (6th .7th, and 8th grade) .

Also, with the guidance and help of Mrs. Mullen, Mrs. Colandene, and many others; the Administration is still working on proposals to incorporate art and music into the regular classroom curriculum. And, they are working to identify a resource teacher to replace Mrs. Gemperline who is moving to Japan with her family.

Right now, it is a difficult economic environment for Catholic Schools and many of our families. We have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks. Thanks to everyone for their ideas and positive suggestions!
