Today, Mrs. Colandene led the the Fabulous Fifth Grade on a field trip to the Manassas National Battlefield ( http://www.nps.gov/mana ).
Not only was this the first major battle of the Civil War; it was the first time that troops were tactically moved to the front line for combat and it was the battle where General Thomas Jackson got the nickname "Stonewall" ( http://www.nps.gov/archive/mana/battlefield_history/morning.htm ).
Ranger Hank provided a great tour of the First Battle of Manassas/Bull Run. For the Civil War history buffs on the email list, the Fifth Graders took a walking tour of Henry Hill.
Thank you to Mrs. Schlesinger for organizing the event! And, thank you to Mr. Morales and Mr. Hugo for driving!
P.S. Ask a Fifth Grader why Wilbur McLean said the Civil War began and ended with him.
